How to Use Sea Buckthorn Oil for Skin: A Practical Guide

by Health Organizer on Aug 01, 2026

Sea buckthorn oil has a loyal following in skincare circles, but a lot of people buy a bottle and aren't quite sure how to actually use it day to day. Here's a straightforward guide — how much to use, when to apply it, and what it's traditionally used for.

A Quick Note Before You Start

Sea buckthorn oil is deep orange-red because of its natural carotenoid content, and a little goes a long way. It can temporarily tint very light or sensitive skin if overused, so start small. As with any new skincare product, it's worth doing a patch test on a small area first, and checking with a dermatologist if you have an existing skin condition rather than self-treating with any oil.

How to Apply It on Your Face

  1. Cleanse your face as usual and pat it dry.
  2. Take 2–3 drops of sea buckthorn oil — you genuinely don't need more.
  3. Warm it slightly between your fingertips, then press (don't rub) it into your skin.
  4. Follow with your regular moisturizer if you use one, or apply it as the last step at night.

Because of its natural pigment, many people prefer using it at night rather than under makeup during the day.

Using It for Scars and Uneven Tone

For scars or patches of uneven skin tone, the common approach is to apply a drop or two directly to the area and gently massage it in, ideally as part of a nightly routine. Consistency matters more than quantity here — a small amount used regularly tends to work better than a lot used occasionally.

Using It for Sun Spots and Dullness

Sea buckthorn oil is often layered as a base underneath a separate sunscreen in the morning routine, or used at night as a treatment step after sun exposure during the day. It's not a replacement for sunscreen — think of it as a supporting step, not a substitute for proper sun protection.

Using It on Hair

Beyond the face, sea buckthorn oil is also used as a scalp treatment. A common method is massaging a few drops into the scalp about 20 minutes before showering, or using it as a leave-in treatment on dry ends.

How Long Before You See Results?

Skincare oils generally need consistent use over several weeks before any visible difference shows up — there's no overnight fix with any natural oil, and results vary from person to person. If you're using it for a specific skin concern, patience and regular use matter more than the amount you apply each time.

Our Sea Buckthorn Oil

Our Sea Buckthorn Oil is cold-pressed from wild-harvested Gilgit-Baltistan berries, sold pure with no dilution. It comes in 30ml, 60ml, and 100ml sizes — a 30ml bottle lasts a long time given how little you need per use. If you want a fuller routine, the Seabuckthorn Radiant Skin Deal pairs the oil with seabuckthorn juice, and our Pure Apricot Oil is a lighter, less pigmented alternative if you'd rather ease in gradually.
